A 2-day Halong Bay itinerary packs an incredible amount into just 30 hours on the water. Here’s exactly what to expect — hour by hour — so you can arrive prepared and get the most out of every moment.

Day 1 — Arrival & First Impressions

7:30 AM — Hotel Pickup in Hanoi

Your air-conditioned bus or limousine van picks you up from your Hanoi hotel. The drive takes approximately 3.5 hours with a 15-minute rest stop at a rest area along the way. Use this time to pick up snacks or use the bathroom — facilities on smaller boats can be limited.

12:00 PM — Board the Cruise Ship

Welcome aboard! You’ll check in, be shown to your cabin, and head to the dining room for a welcome lunch. As you eat, the boat pulls away from the pier and you get your first views of Halong Bay’s famous limestone karsts. The scenery builds gradually — by the time you’re done eating, you’ll be surrounded by hundreds of rocky islands covered in jungle vegetation.

2:30 PM — Cave Exploration

Most 2-day cruises visit either Surprising Cave (Hang Sung Sot) or Thien Canh Son Cave — both are UNESCO-listed and genuinely spectacular. Your guide will explain the formations and local legends. Wear comfortable shoes with grip — the cave paths can be slippery.

4:00 PM — Kayaking & Bamboo Boat

This is the highlight for most travellers. You’ll paddle (or be paddled in a bamboo boat) through narrow passages between karsts, into hidden lagoons only accessible by small watercraft. The silence and the scale of the limestone walls around you is something photos don’t fully capture.

6:00 PM — Sunset on the Sundeck

The boat anchors in a quiet bay for the night. Drinks are served on the sundeck as the sun drops behind the limestone mountains. This is the moment most people say they’ll remember forever.

7:30 PM — Dinner & Evening

Multi-course Vietnamese seafood dinner on board. After dinner, many boats offer squid fishing off the back deck — simple but surprisingly addictive. Or just sit on the top deck under the stars.

Day 2 — Morning on the Bay

6:30 AM — Sunrise (Optional)

Early risers are rewarded with extraordinary light on the karsts. Set an alarm — it’s worth it.

7:00 AM — Tai Chi on Deck

Most cruise boats offer a 30-minute tai chi session led by a crew member. Optional but a lovely way to start the day.

8:00 AM — Breakfast & Cooking Demo

Breakfast is served as the boat begins the return journey. Many boats include a short cooking demonstration — you’ll learn to make spring rolls or another Vietnamese dish.

11:30 AM — Disembark at the Pier

Transfer back to Hanoi, arriving around 5–6 PM. Most people go straight for a shower and a proper Vietnamese meal.
